Still Like

Tout a commencé avec cette photo de Soungalo Malé, photographe malien des années 60 dont le travail est exposé à la Biennale africaine de la photo de Bamako jusqu'à fin décembre 2011. Ce photographe ambulant allait de village en village, improvisait un studio en tendant un tissu  et dressait le portrait de gens modestes. Cela nous a donné envie de recréer cette photo dans un studio éphémère.                                             It all started with this photo, which has been shot by Soungalo Malé, a Malian photographer of the sixties, whose work is presented in Bamako at the African Biennial of Photography until the end of December 2011. This itinerant photographer was going from one village to the next, setting up a studio with a simple fabric for background, and taking pictures of humble people. It made us want to recreate this photo in a temporary studio.

  

Avec la complicité toujours bienveillante de l'hôtel Faro, on a donc emprunté la bicyclette du voisin, réquisitionné Adama le réceptionniste et Sitan la nounou des enfants, tendu une housse de couette.. et voilà le travail ! enfin presque.... car notre goût immodéré de la nature morte nous a fait ajouter quelques éléments qui n'apparaissaient pas dans la photo de Soungalo Malé.                    With the benevolent help of Hotel Faro, we borrowed the neighbour's bicycle, enlisted Adama, the receptionnist and Sitan, the children's nannie, and spread a quilt cover for the background.. and that's that done ! almost actually... because our immoderate love for still life made us add a few things that did not exist in Soungalo Malé's photo...

Il faut dire qu'au marché de Ségou, on avait trouvé du teninni, petit poisson de friture que l'on pêche surtout en janvier-février  et dont on extrait de l'huile.. et aussi du dodo, ce poisson délicieux quoiqu'un peu maudit dont on a parlé dans une précédente note. On a alors complété la bicyclette avec quelques dodos sur le guidon et des teninnis pour le cadre.  C'est le concept de Still Like..

At the Segou market, we had spotted teninni fish, rich in oil, perfect for frying, and mostly available in January-February... and also dodo, this delicious but cursed fish that we wrote about in a previous post. We then adorned the bicycle with a few dodos hanging from the handlebar and teninnis from the frame.This is the Still Like concept ...

Les expositions ne montrent jamais l'envers du décor, quel dommage ! Ici, il est important de savoir que la couette était aimablement tenue par Chiaka, le valet de chambre et Koniba, le jardinier.

Exhibitions never show the making of, what a pity ! Here, it is important to know that the quilt cover was kindly held by Chiaka, the valet, and Koniba, the gardener.
