Spring has arrived and on the old market place of Dresden, food and drink stands bloom with wine, beer, asparagus, mushrooms and of course all types of sausages made of pork or horse. Once you have found what makes you happy, you just have to find a table and choose which combination of wax cloth-flower pot appeals to you.

Envie de vichy ?
Crave for gingham ?

     Plutôt fleurs sur fleurs ?
Rather fancy flowers on flowers ?

Unless dots would seduce you ?

Or eventually in the mood for stripes ?

Ludwig is a small electric train that runs along a 3,59 m track, back and forth, all day long. It overlooks the road maps shelf in the  Ludwig book shop of the Leipzig train station.

In this huge space, the little train stands alongside with plenty of books and a coffee shop, where extremely nice waitresses offer all sorts of drinks and foods, including a peculiar French wine, named "Caress". Its label mentions that it was produced in Southern France and bottled in Eastern France, therefore this Caress might by no way be of controlled origin.  However, you can still enjoy it, comfortably seated in an armchair while reading newspapers or Aunt Poldi's advice. Aunt Poldi is the heroine of an Italian detective novel, her latest adventures just came out and are sold a few meters away.

Her maxims are printed on beer mats and are delightful pieces of marketing.

"My emergency plan : to wake up, a Prosecco, then an expresso with foam, at 11 am the first beer and so on.."

"Always overdress"

"Decency is a weakness, remember that !"

"When it really becomes serious, always a skirt and a décolleté !"

In Kreuzberg's Markthalle IX, one of the most lively markets of Berlin, a few notes spotted at the Cheese Stand :

"The Cheese Ladies do not know when Jan the Butcher comes".

"Unfortunately neither does The Loo Man".

"The Fish Girls do not have a clue".

"The Flower Ladies  say it is on Saturday".

"I wouldn't know what to do with that', argue-t-elle, d'un air dégoûté..

When we bought the ticket for Nadie quiere la noche, the opening film of the Berlinale, we thought that the director was Chilean and that the film took place in Patagonia. Actually Isabel Coixet is Spanish and shot the film in the North Pole. Juliette Binoche interprets Josephine, we are at the end of the XIXth century, her husband is about to discover the North Pole and she travels to share this big achievement with him. The whole setting looks like an advertising campaign for Louis Vuitton. In her trunk, she stores dresses that do not exactly fit a rather cold climate, a fur hat that does not even protect her ears and thin fashion gloves whereas everyone else wears mittens. In all circumstances, she manages to remain chic, walking with her silver pommel stick.

Frankly speaking, the film is really bad but in the culinary section of the Berlinale, it would be a hit.

Josephine was probably very much inspired by Out of Africa where Meryl Streep and Robert Redford have dinner together in the bush, amidst silver cutlery, fine crystal glasses and dance to music played by a phonograph. In her case, Enrico Caruso sings Puccini's Manon Lescaut in the snow.

Josephine's taste buds do not seem to enjoy adventure, she is not really open to the discovery of new dishes. For instance she turns down a gift of seal meat, that was kindly offered to her, arguing "I wouldn't know what to do with that'. She even tries to prove the superiority of western eating customs and invites her Inuit neighbour to dinner and teaches her how to use a fork and a knife. She deliberately makes her tipsy with a glass of wine.

However, the more the story moves forward, the less Josephine can afford to be picky. At some point she must eat raw seal meat wondering 'What would they think of that in Park Avenue ?'. Then in a very dramatic moment, where she starts loosing her mind, her Inuit friend, Alaka, has to chew some raw frozen dog food before feeding her with it. When the 2 women are desperate about food, there 's nothing left to eat, they have no choice but to boil dog skin. Starving Josephine still pulls a face. The phonograph days are long gone with the storm.

Artist's Statement

Berlin Graphic Days take place this week-end in a warehouse, located amidst industrial buildings, that are tagged from bottom to top..

Dehors sur les murs, on repère des pensées profondes forcément profondes : 'How Much is The Fish ?'

Outside, on the walls, we spotted deep thoughts : 'How Much is the Fish ?'

Ou encore 'Couscous'. Sont-ce des artists' statements ?

Or 'Couscous'; Are these  Artists' Statements ?

Piece of Magic

Inside, we mostly liked the Urban Spree Cafe cake, named  'Piece of Magic'

Boutik lontan

Chinese Breast Show

You dream of a banana or peanuts ice cream that definitely does not taste natural, you think of decorating your living room with a laughing chubby Buddha, you want to bet on horses, you need cigarettes, you fancy tamarind sweets, you would like to buy sardines cans, soap, a tooth brush or fire crackers ? Head towards the Chinese grocery store round the corner, the "boutik lontan" - old world shop in local language. It's an unlikely and eclectic  bazaar, where you can also have a drink and eat or take away food from.

A line of ice-creams that are delightfully chemical : banana, tamarind, orange, peanuts, guava

St Pierre - Take away
They are a bit similar to the shops run by North Africans, that exist in mainland France but they offer more, they offer an atmosphere.

Jean-Marie Kwan-Lan, Ste Anne

Of Course the days of their splendour are gone, people now use cars, shop in supermarkets and no longer need them as much as before. But still they remain a focal point of the neighbourhood life, where people stop to get news from each other, have a drink and kids buy their favorite sweets there on the way back from school. Many people keep sweet memories of their boutik lontan, just like a Proust's madeleine that is blurred by a haze of nostalgia.

Tellement Vintage la boutique de Jean-Marie Kwan Lan à Ste Anne !
Jean-Marie Kwan Lan's  shop is so vintage !

The Filling Station Londres

In London, everything is possible, even have a real dinner in a petrol station. At King's Cross, a former petrol station has been recently turned to a trendy and stylish restaurant, The Filling Station, by the London-based architectural studio Carmody Groarke

Slick modern architecture, graphic neons, quirky inside decoration, good fish food and outside tables with a giant screen, make it unique and The place to go, except, if you expect to fill your tank !

In the Mood for Mushrooms ?

A nice place, a funny twisted name (café des spores), a talented chef and a creative idea : cooking everything with mushrooms, this is the statement of this restaurant in Brussels.

It might be strange to taste a crême brûlée with mushrooms or a tiramisu with mushrooms, however it is worth trying because the result is amazing. The chef knows how to play with mushrooms to obtain the right balance of flavours.

Pizza on the Road

A  twenty-foot container turned to  Kitchen on the Move for the sake of cooking Neapolitan pizza...
That's the concept of Del Popolo Mobile Pizzeria. It includes a traditional italian-made wood-fired oven and you'll just need to wait 1 mn to get your cripspy pizza. It can be spotted in San Francisco via its twitter. Beautiful truck, isn't it ?

Beautifully Fast Food

Planes occasionally get delayed and leave you hungry while waiting. Plane food is often revolting despite sporadic efforts to improve it. People rushing about would have left home without time for breakfast. These are several good reasons for enjoying food-to-go to take in the waiting room or on to the plane.

And instead of the usual grim and dull fast foods, the British chef Jamie Oliver developped a new concept at London Gatwick Airport.

The food-to-go branding and packaging was developped by The Plant and is based on the 'joy of flying' idea, incorporating airport rumble strips, city flight codes, passport stamps and some plane iconography. The food-to-go packaging goes with the strap-line ‘Beautifully Fast Food’. What a challenge !
The food could even be tasty...

Just in case, any confused Vegetarian have wandered in off the street, he could enjoy a beetroot salad or chips, abundant, in juicy chicken sauce without noticing at first a cock standing on an amazing bull above his head.

If you just come out of the Damien Hirst exhibition at the Tate Modern, head towards London East End and discover the former tramshed turned into the latest Mark Hix's Shoreditch outpost. A gigantic 'Cock and Bull' preserved in formaldehyde, dominates the interior of tramshed.

There is nothing such as eating pleasantly, contemplating the finitude of life. Chickens roasted vertically, and brought to table impaled with their feet still attached towards the sky, will take you back on earth, in such a way that it looks like you are among a bizarre circus.

Better not to mix up Jeannette and Mauri 7...

Chez Jeannette is an old café where people used to dance a long time ago. it has been refursbished, but not too heavily. Old moleskine seats remain torn down The magnificent neon is original and oversized ceiling lights have been kept.

Perfect for reading newspapers with a coffee in the morning, very nice to have lunch, and at night plenty of people rush to the bar.

Mauri 7 is another story.. a bit kitsch or dull depending on your mood, with pinball machines and an unlikely name. In French, Mauri 7 is pronounced Mauricette. Jeannette and Mauricette are firstnames of our grandmothers time. It's facing Chez Jeannette who is much more beautiful than Mauricette...

Chez Jeannette, 47 rue du Faubourg St Denis, 75010 Paris
