Farming is Charming

D'habitude, les vernissages concernent des expositions, on vient voir de l'art. Oui mais, Berlin ne fait rien comme tout le monde. Hier, le vernissage concernait une ferme, on inaugurait une ferme dans une ancienne malterie. Berlin est toujours surprenante !

Openings are usually meant for art exhibitions. But in Berlin things may work in a slightly different way. Yesterday it was a Farm Opening that took place in a former Maltmill. Berlin is always surprising !

De quoi s'agit it ? La naissance de ce projet d'agriculture urbaine s'appuie sur 4 constats.

1. CO2 Footprint : entre 17 et 22 % des émissions globales de carbone proviennent de l'agriculture.              

What is it all about ? Four observations helped shape this urban agriculture project. 

1. CO2 Footprint : between 17 and 22 % of global CO2 emissions come from agriculture.

2. Water Footprint : 70 % de l'eau consommée  est utilisée dans l'agriculture.     

2. Water Footprint : 70 % of water is used in agriculture. 

                                    

3. Ocean Footprint : 85 % des mers sont en surpêche 

3. Ocean Footprint : 85 % of seas suffer from over fish catch                       

4. Feed Footprint : pour obtenir 1 kg de filet de boeuf, il faut d'abord lui donner 8 kg de nourriture. Pour 1 kg de poisson élevé dans les bassins berlinois de l'ancienne malterie, seulement 1,2 kg de nourriture sont nécessaires. 

4. Feed Footprint : to get 1 kg sirloin steak, 8 kg are necessary to feed the beef. For 1 kg fish raised in Berlin Maltmill, only 1,2 kg are necessary to feed the fish.

En bref, mieux vaut élever des poissons plutôt que de les pêcher, préférer les poissons aux vaches, produire des légumes locaux tout en économisant de l'eau Le concept 'Charming Farming' qui a pour objectif de développer l'aquaculture et la culture des légumes en un cercle vertueux cherche à associer tous ces éléments. 

Comment ça marche ?

L'eau des bassins à poissons est enrichie par des nutriments légumiers, le poisson végétarien est ainsi plus costaud et bio à chaque instant. L'eau des poissons sert à irriguer les cultures de légumes. 

Le Farmer's Market offrira à partir de début mai  des paniers de légumes. Pour l'instant, il n'y a que quelques herbettes à la vente. Pour les poissons, faut aussi attendre qu'ils grossissent un peu.. 

Therefore better to raise fish than fish it, better to raise fish than beef, better to grow local vegetables and save water at the same time. The concept 'Charming Farming' that aims at developing aquaculture and vegetable growing at the same time combines all these factors. How does it work ? The water from fish ponds is enriched with vegetable nutrients, fish are therefore stronger, and every second more organic... The water coming from the fish ponds is used to irrigate vegetable fields.

The Farmer's Market plans to offer its first vegetables at the beginning of May. Fish lovers will have to wait a little longer, so that small fish can become big.

At the time being, only a few herbs are available. Fortunately, we can enjoy the project drawings. And with them, we feel much more comfortable with the idea of saving the world.. 

Ces quelques plantouilles ci-dessous, c'est tout ce qu'on voit pour l'instant. Heureusement on a les dessins du graphiste, c'est ce qui nous a aussi rendu ce projet franchement sympathique.
