Breakfast at The Museum

Jusqu’à l’invention de l’éclairage au gaz à la fin du XVIII ème siècle, la journée de travail était rythmée par la lumière du jour. Le petit déjeuner se prenait au saut du lit, entre 6 et 7 h et se composait d’un bout de pain ou d’une bouillie de céréales, accompagnés d’une boisson qui était au moyen âge, de la bière ou du vin. A partir du XVII ème siècle apparaissent chez les riches les boissons exotiques thé, café et chocolat. Les pauvres s’en tiennent aux breuvages alcoolisés.

Before the invention of gas lighting at the end of the XVIII th century, the working day started with daylight. Breakfast was eaten on getting out of bed, between 6 and 7 am and was made of a piece of bread or a cereal porridge and a drink. In the Middle Ages it was either beer or wine. From the XVII th century on, drinks such as tea, coffee and chocolate are available in rich households. The poor stick to alcoholic drinks.

Entre 10 h 30 et 12 h, on prenait un autre petit déj avec du pain et du beurre et pour ceux qui en avaient les moyens de la viande, du poisson, du jambon, du fromage, des fruits, c’est l’ancêtre du brunch en fait. Et on invitait. Bien évidemment tout un art de l’étiquette suivait. Argenterie et porcelaine étaient de sortie chez les riches mais pas de fleurs sur la table, réservées au dîner.

Between 10 h 30 and 12 h, there was a second breakfast with bread and butter and for those who could afford it meat, fish, ham, cheese, fruit. Very similar to the brunch we enjoy nowadays. And it was a social event with etiquette. The rich would show their silverware and china crockery but would avoid flowers on the table since it was only suitable for dinner.

Never forget to pair Food and Tableware

On ne  trempait pas le pain dans le café, on ne parlait que de choses légères et surtout on ne s’engueulait pas, pas de sujet sensible…

Comment avez vous passé la nuit ? Comment va votre santé ? étaient autorisés mais rien de plus personnel. La journée devait être radieuse, forcément radieuse.

They would not dip the bread in the coffee, they would talk in a light manner of light subjects and would never allow an argument to pop up. No sensitive issue would be addressed..

How did you spend the night ? How is your health ? Nothing more private was to be tolerated. The day had to be radiant, necessarily radiant.
